EMDR Therapy

(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)Therapy is a technique which involves processing negative or traumatic experiences from the past in order to heal and find relief from current distressing symptoms. EMDR can help you identify positive resources and experiences and move forward with your life.

Who is it for?

EMDR is great for children, teens, adults, families and couples too! It can be used as a treatment for anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, phobias, addictions, grief, and trauma.

How does it work?

When we experience trauma, (or negative life events) all of the memories, feelings, thoughts, and sensations from that time get locked in our brains and our bodies. When a future event takes place that reminds us of this incident, we might react as though we are re-experiencing this negative event. We may become anxious, or aggressive, or withdraw and shutdown, in our mind associating this current stressor with that old trauma.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, which is a back and forth motion, typically done with eye moments similar to those you might experience during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep in which dreaming takes place. Similar to dreams, in which our brain processes unconscious material, these movements allow our brain to “unlock” those stuck sensations, feelings, and thoughts, and bring in more positive information to re-process the negative event.

Is it effective?

EMDR is an effective evidence based treatment for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) anxiety, depression, and more. It has been researched extensively and supported by many health organizations including, APA (The American Psychological Association), ISTSS (The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies) and (WHO) The World Health Organization.
