Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance and movement can help you reconnect with your mind and body to release stress, manage anxiety and depression, build confidence, and find hope and healing.

What is Dance/Movement Therapy?

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is a form of creative arts therapy similar to art, music, or drama therapy. DMT focuses on movement interventions to help you connect your mind with your body. The movement becomes a vehicle for self-expression, healing, and growth.

Who is it for?

Dance/movement therapy is for everyone! Children, teens, families, couples, groups, and adults can all benefit from dance/movement therapy. It is especially useful for people who struggle with communication, like to express themselves in creative ways, have excess energy, enjoy movement and mindfulness techniques, have experienced trauma or have symptoms of anxiety and depression, and are open to integrative mind-body approaches.

How can it help me?

Movement can help you get out of your head and into your body! Ever struggle with overthinking? Maybe you find yourself talking in circles, which makes you more anxious and is not helpful.

The mind and the body are connected so working through movement can help shift thoughts in the brain, giving us new insight into our problems.

Movement techniques can also boost your mood, increase self-esteem, help you manage emotions, make you feel more comfortable in your body, and lower anxiety and depression.

What does a dance/movement therapy session look like?

It can look very different depending on the age and needs of the individual, couple, or family. The sessions usually begin with a body warm up with stretching, breathing, or a body awareness exercise. Through mindfulness, physical movement, and breathing we will explore a challenge or stressor in your life. Sometimes we might create movement together, mirror each other’s movements, or use play as another means of self-expression.

What if I can’t dance?

No dance experience required! Dance/movement therapy is not about dance technique or specific skills but rather about movement as an avenue for exploration, self-expression, regulation, and body awareness.
