Somatic Therapy
movement and somatic approaches can help you reconnect with your mind and body to release stress, manage anxiety and depression, build confidence, and find hope and healing.
What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered form of psychotherapy that involves the mind-body connection to relieve stress and trauma and help regulate the nervous system. The body becomes a vehicle for self-expression, healing, and growth.
Who is it for?
Somatic work is for everyone! Children, teens, families, couples, groups, and adults can all benefit from embodied approaches. It is especially useful for people who struggle with communication, like to express themselves in creative ways, have excess energy, enjoy movement and mindfulness techniques, have experienced trauma or have symptoms of anxiety and depression, and are open to integrative mind-body approaches.
How can it help me?
Movement can help you get out of your head and into your body! Ever struggle with overthinking? Maybe you find yourself talking in circles, which makes you more anxious and is not helpful.
The mind and the body are connected so working through movement can help shift thoughts in the brain, giving us new insight into our problems.
Movement techniques and body-centered interventions can also boost your mood, increase self-esteem, help you manage emotions, make you feel more comfortable in your body, and lower anxiety and depression.
What does a somatic therapy session look like?
It can look very different depending on the age and needs of the individual, couple, or family. The sessions usually begin with a body warm up with stretching, breathing, or a body awareness exercise.
I utilize a variety of techniques from Dance/movement therapy, somatic experiencing, and mindfulness practices, including guided meditations, physical movement, breathing and tapping.. Sometimes we might create movement together, mirror each other’s movements, explore tension in the body, use play as another means of self-expression, or create movement gestures to help the body release tension and create healthier patterns.
